Earlier this month, the Hendy Motorsport rally team headed, once again, to Northern France for the 41st running of the Rally of Bethune. This year's event, held over 8-9 September, proved even more popular and attracted several British crews and a class field from all over Europe, including WRC regular Stephane Lefebvre.
All was not plain sailing from the start, with all the British crews struggling at signing-on and scrutineering, with licences and new seal belt regulations. The issue with the licences was a relatively simple fix in the end, however, the seat belts were more of a headache! So... a trip to Paris, a late night and early morning, saw all the crews manage to replace their belts and be on the start-line in time on the Saturday.
With as many as 9 WRC cars and 9 R5 class cars, the pace was always going to be 'hot', and that proved to be the case.
The Fiesta R5 of the Hendy team battled hard on the first day, with a couple of overshoots and half spins to end up in 13th place overall, and 9th in class.
Sunday was a different experience. With the sun shining and the heat rising, the team came out of the box fighting. Steve Hendy and Aled Davies pushed hard and were immediately on the pace, catching some of the competition napping. Very quickly, they were up to just outside the top 10, despite struggling with the pace notes on one of the stages.
With renewed confidence and a big charge on the final loop, Hendy and Davies finished the two days in a creditable 9th overall place, and 5th in the ever competitive R5 class.
The Rally of Bethune wrapped up the 2018 season and the team are ever-grateful to the list of sponsors that make it all possible, namely Hendy Performance, Kisho UK, Tintinit, WP Fuels, Castrol and Protyre.
